When should my child take the ACT?

Most students should wait until they have completed Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry before taking the ACT. Students who wish to take a class for Dual Enrollment credit need to take the ACT no later than the summer before they plan to enroll in Dual Enrollment classes.

Should my child take your class even if he or she hasn't taken the ACT yet?

I recommend that students take the test at least once before they take the class.  This gives them a baseline score and helps me identify areas of strength and weakness.  It also helps the student to focus during class and generates realistic expectations for parents.

When should my child take your class?

Classes are generally comprised of juniors and seniors, although sophomores who are taking a rigorous course load are also welcome.  Students should take the test as close as possible to the end of the ACT class to ensure maximum retention and performance.

What does my student need to bring?

  • pencil(s) or pens

  • a highlighter

  • a binder or folder to keep track of handouts

  • the calculator that he or she will use on the test

  • a snack and/ or drink

  • a sweatshirt/ comfortable clothing

Do you offer private tutoring?

At this time, I do not have any private tutoring spots available.  Students taking classes often achieve greater score growth, largely due to the extended hours given for targeted practice during class sessions.  Additionally, camaraderie and friendly competition seem to spur performance for many students.  Classes are kept small (usually fewer than 20 students) to ensure that each student receives plenty of individual time and attention.  If your child needs private tutoring in a particular subject, I recommend that you reach out to Jennifer Etzel for reading (jaetzel@gmail.com); Beth Smith for math (bethsmith1124@gmail.com); and Kody Chase for science (kody.chase@mcschools.net).

How much do students normally improve?

In the fall of 2017, students enrolled in my semester-long class improved an average of 4.1 points on their composite scores. The previous semester, the average was 2.7 points.  The student who improved the least gained one point. The student who improved the most gained 9 points (although this is highly unusual!)

Do you guarantee that my child's score will improve?

Due to the uncertainty of standardized testing and different student learning styles, I do not offer a guarantee. Generally, students can expect to improve 2-4 points over a longer (18 hour) class. If a student who enrolled in a full workshop attends all classes and completes all homework and practice tests and takes the test immediately after the course ends, does not improve at least two points, he or she may take the subsequent class (workshop or bootcamp) free of charge.

What happens if my student misses a class?

Students who miss class will be given all course materials from the date missed.  While I do not offer make-up classes, I will be available before and after class, and during breaks, to answer any questions about missed material.

What is your cancellation policy?

Students may cancel up to one week before the class begins and get a full refund, less a $15 cancellation fee to cover the costs imposed by PayPal.  If you need to cancel, please email me at katherine.sandifer@gmail.com as soon as possible, so that I can make the spot available to other students.

What should my student expect when taking this course?

All four subject areas are covered during each class.  I will rotate which subject we cover first to improve student focus.  For each subject, I will offer an in-depth review of skills.  This is especially important for the English and Math tests.  Additionally, I will review tips and techniques that will help students improve overall performance and speed.  The class is a rigorous one; students should come prepared to be engaged for the entire class period.  Students may access their phones only during breaks.  Homework and practice tests will be assigned each week to help students review and maintain their skills.
